“Leaders lead out of who they are on the inside.” – Gary Haugen

Speakers at the Global Leadership Summit – Day Two

Patrick Lencioni

  • “People need to be reminded more than they need to be instructed.” – Samuel Johnson
  • Don’t confuse your core values with aspirational values.
  • A core value is something worth getting punished for.
  • Strategy should be accessible to everyone, down to every employee.
  • Being all things to all people means being nothing to no one.
  • Organizations have to say things seven times to get through.

William Ury

  • We’re negotiating from the moment we wake up in the morning to time we go to bed at night.
  • No injustice or unfairness ever gets addressed without conflict.
  • We are the biggest barrier to us achieving success.
  • When angry, you will make the best speech you will ever regret.
  • The foundation of successful negotiation is not to react.
  • Don’t mistake being hard on the problem by being hard on the people. Be soft on the people and hard on the problem.
  • In a negotiation, to listen costs you nothing but means everything to the other person.
  • Negotiation is a battle of will.
  • What are some objective criteria of fairness?
  • Positive alternative thinking: BATNA (Best alternative to negotiation agreement)
  • Some conflicts are so difficult that they can only be healed by a story. The story of Abraham has that potential.
  • “Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking.” – old Spanish proverb
  • “Do I not destroy my enemy when I turn them into my friend?” – Abraham Lincoln

Pranitha Timothy

  • Feeble, and yet powerful in His hands.
  • The restoration of people is not easy.
  • We are called to serve with a God who is already at work.

Mario Vega

  • We are not only responsible for our own actions, but also for the actions of those we influence.
  • When values differ, life’s road begins to pull people apart and only by accident do their paths cross.
  • Integrity lost cannot be fully restored. (Agree or disagree?)
  • Give yourself permission to grieve and to hurt, to cry and journey through depression. But never give yourself permission to avoid doing what is right. And don’t give yourself permission to remain in the valley of depression.

John Ortberg

  • Too often we argue about Christianity instead of marvel at Jesus.
  • Jesus changed how we understand history.
  • Jesus changed how we understand compassion.
  • The Jesus movement revolutionized art.
  • The Jesus movement changed political theory.
  • The church generally follows Jesus worse when it has more political power than when it does not.
  • Jesus changed how we think about human rights and dignity.
  • The discoverer of the realm of forgiveness in the realm of human affairs was Jesus of Nazareth. – Hannah Arendt, secular historian

Geoffrey Canada

  • Kids need constant reinforcement of encouragement in school to counter the 20 negative reinforcement messages a day they hear.
  • I love people. I believe in redemption. People can get better.
  • Hold everybody accountable to a level of expectations.
  • Fundraising: There’s a line where receiving the money will actually hurt your work.
  • If I would have begun to water down the vision, it would have destroyed my program.
  • I’m impatient with failure.
  • “It’s always the bus!” #contextisforweenies
  • This is a business [or a church or an organization], not a cult of personality.
  • Leadership transition: If you want to attract talent, you have to tell them you’re leaving.
  • We are in a moment on a path to victory.
  • I saw the church was people who talk about good things but don’t want to do the tough stuff.
  • The real test of faith is when you’re faced with something where only your faith will keep you believing in God.
  • If you have faith, it will pull you through anything.
  • If you’re a leader, you’ve got to bat 100% and always be on top of your game. Get that moral compass right. Every time a leader gains notoriety and acts immoral, it leads people on the fence to say, “I knew it wasn’t true, they were all lying.”

Bill Hybels

  • Vision is a picture of the future that produces passion in people.
  • God will accompany those who are walking back to integrity.
  • Everyone wins when a leader gets better.
  • Vision makes the present place indefensible. We can’t stay here.
  • I will gladly do my best to teach and lead if You will energize it. (Bill speaking to God)
  • The local church is the hope of the world.
  • Don’t be that guy. You’ll regret it forever.
  • There’s probably more latent talent aggregated here than almost any other gathering in human history.
